In collaboration with UKRI, this roadmap outlines the strategic actions required to capture a share of the $27 billion global market for alternative proteins.
Details
As consumer demand shifts away from traditional meat and dairy, the UK faces a unique opportunity to lead in the sustainable protein sector. This report identifies the specific challenges that must be overcome to scale production and meet the projected market growth by 2027.
The roadmap focuses on leveraging the UK’s existing science base and industrial capability. It argues for a "place-based" approach to investment, utilising regional clusters like in Kent and Medway to drive national growth.
The report details priorities for three key pillars:
Plant-Based Proteins: Improving crop breeding and processing to enhance taste and texture while reducing costs.
Fermentation: Scaling precision fermentation technologies to produce functional ingredients and protein sources.
Novel Systems: Supporting emerging technologies, such as lab-cultured meat, through regulatory clarity and infrastructure investment.
Supply Chain: Developing domestic supply chains to reduce reliance on imported commodities like soya.
