Mushroom Waste and Valorisation

Report: The potential of mushroom by-products for a biobased circular economy

Details

This report explores the potential use for mushroom waste and by-products.

Spent mushroom substrate is the remaining by-product left from growing the crop. It is considered a waste that cannot be used for further cycles. It is traditionally disposed through incineration, landfill or compost.

However, scientists are now exploring the use of metabolites and bioactive compounds found in this substrate, secreted by mushrooms during their growth period. These compounds are being explored for their use as fungicides, antibiotics, antioxidants, and other useful products.

This report is an extract from a wider publication looking at the potential for agricultural and horticultural waste for a biobased circular economy in South East England. The full report explores opportunities for vegetable, fruit, hop, cereal, and mushroom waste valorisation.
