The toolkit provides an evidence-based blueprint for organisations aiming to tackle local youth unemployment through entrepreneurship with food and drink.
Details
This practical guide is primarily based on our successful Be Your Own Boss pilot programme in Margate, incorporating key learnings from our work in Medway. It was designed to address the barriers facing young people (aged 18–24) who are interested in self-employment but may face challenges accessing traditional business support.
Rather than a rigid set of rules, the toolkit offers a flexible guide for organisations to co-design their own iterations of the programme. It provides the administrative backbone required to set up the scheme – including templates for Service Level Agreements and intake forms – while outlining the necessary structure to move participants from initial interest to business readiness.
The guide includes resources to help organisations:
Build Partnerships: Advice on co-designing the programme with local community hubs to ensure it is relevant, accessible, and grounded in the local area.
Recruit Effectively: Guidance on working with local youth hubs and outreach partners to engage young people who might otherwise face barriers to entry, ensuring the opportunity is inclusive.
Measure Impact: Essential templates included in the 'Kit Bag', such as baseline questionnaires and feedback forms, to help organisers capture participant data and evaluate progress.
